Emeritus Professor Alan Pettigrew elected Deputy Chancellor

Senate has elected Emeritus Professor Alan Pettigrew as Deputy Chancellor for a two-year term of office from 1 December 2025.

At the 26 September Senate meeting, Michelle Stanhope, Returning Officer and Chief Governance Officer declared the election of Emeritus Professor Alan Pettigrew as Deputy Chancellor for a two-year term of office, commencing 1 December 2025.

Emeritus Professor Pettigrew has held senior academic executive appointments at the Universities of Sydney, Queensland, and New South Wales, and the role of Vice-Chancellor at the University of New England. He has been a Fellow of our Senate since May 2019, Pro-Chancellor since June 2021, and Chair of Senate’s People and Culture Committee since June 2019.

Emeritus Professor Pettigrew is also a national leader in medical research governance, having served as the inaugural CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, a member of the Commonwealth Cooperative Research Centres Committee, a member of the Council of the QIMRBerghofer Medical Research Institute and an adviser to the Chief Scientist of Australia. He has also contributed to international projects supported by the World Bank, the OECD and the Swedish International Development Agency.

Alan is a distinguished academic, leader and adviser in higher education strategy, policy and governance; I welcome his appointment as Deputy Chancellor.
