Professor Mike Ryan has been appointed Deputy Vice‑Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney.

Currently Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Monash University Professor Ryan previously served as Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise). He brings extensive senior leadership experience from Monash, one of Australia’s largest research-intensive universities, with a record of strengthening research performance, collaboration and culture.

An internationally recognised biochemist and molecular biologist, Professor Ryan is renowned for his contributions to understanding mitochondrial function and disease. He has published extensively in leading journals, including Nature and Science, served as President of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and was awarded the Lemberg Medal for his outstanding research and service to the scientific community and society.

During his time as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Monash, Professor Ryan directed an ARC Discovery Project strategy that achieved sector-leading grant outcomes. He played a key role in integrating commercialisation into the research portfolio, as well as advancing major industry and government partnerships, including Moderna and the K-Bio Lab Hub.

A trusted leader, Mike fostered a collaborative and supportive research culture at Monash, working closely with faculties and leading initiatives to promote equity and support early- and mid-career researchers.

In accepting his appointment, Professor Ryan said:

"I’m delighted to join the outstanding research community here at Sydney. This University has a proud history of excellent and impactful research, and I am excited to work with colleagues across all disciplines to deliver world-leading research that makes a difference."

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott congratulated Professor Ryan on the appointment:

"Mike joins us with a clear vision for research at Sydney. His leadership will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the University’s global research standing. I look forward to working closely with him to advance our research aspirations under Sydney in 2032."

The Vice-Chancellor thanked Professor Julie Cairney for her exceptional leadership as Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) since November 2024.

"Julie ensured we maintained momentum on key strategic initiatives during this period of transition, including myResearch Sydney, Horizon Fellowships and our multidisciplinary initiatives program. I am grateful for her dedication and her ongoing contributions to our research portfolio," Professor Scott said.

"Professor Ryan will be joining us as our first permanent Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) since Professor Emma Johnston, who sadly passed away in December. As he joins us, we remain mindful of the exceptional legacy Emma leaves as a brilliant academic and a transformational leader. Her commitment to excellence and her passion for nurturing research talent will continue to guide our work."

Professor Ryan commences Monday, 16 March.
