A new Sponsored Student Scholarship Agreement will support Indonesian students to complete undergraduate and postgraduate coursework in priority areas at the University of Sydney.

Under the agreement, the University will provide a 20 percent contribution towards tuition fees to scholarship recipients for the duration of their course, with remaining tuition fees as well as a stipend and other associated expenses to be provided by the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST).

The agreement includes Indonesia’s new undergraduate sponsorship scheme, Beasiswa Garuda (Garuda Scholarships), a collaboration between MoHEST and Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan (LPDP, Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education).

Running until 1 October 2029, the agreement was signed by the Acting Secretary General of MoHEST, Professor Badri Munir Sukoco, and the University of Sydney’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott.

Speaking to the delegation, Professor Badri emphasised that the partnership represented a concrete step toward advancing higher education that contributes directly to national development in Indonesia.

“Australia is a key partner in shaping Indonesia’s future, particularly in higher education, science, and technology. In line with the President’s directive, we are focusing on human capital development through higher education that contributes to strategic sectors such as food security, energy, maritime affairs, and health, while also expanding collaboration with international partners.”

With established strengths in research and education across these fields, we’re well placed to support students to return home with the skills and expertise that advance Indonesia’s national interests

Professor Scott thanked Professor Badri for the warm welcome extended to the University's delegation and said that the agreement builds on more than 75 years of diplomatic ties between Australia and Indonesia, reinforcing the long-standing education and research partnership between the two countries.

“We expect this new agreement will increase the number of MoHEST sponsored students who study in Australia, in areas of priority to the Indonesian government, including health, food security, maritime, defense and digitialisation and AI. With established strengths in research and education across these fields, we’re well placed to support students to return home with the skills and expertise that advance Indonesia’s national interests.”

“In 2025 we had 65 new students join us at Sydney from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, and we’re delighted this new scholarship will allow us to welcome more Indonesian students, who will have our full support from the time of their application until their graduation day and return home.

“The Garuda school initiative’s focus on STEM and preparing the students to pursue tertiary education at world top institutions will surely provide more exciting opportunities for us to collaborate with the Ministry into the future.”

Beasiswa Garuda prioritises science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) courses with a focus on food and agriculture, renewable energy, maritime, health, digitalisation and AI, defence, down streaming industrialisation and advanced manufacturing.

The visit to Indonesia included meeting with University alumni and partners, and the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, His Excellency Rod Brazier. The University also renewed its agreement with Universitas Indonesia which, among several areas of collaboration, reaffirms a shared commitment to joint research projects, student exchange and coordinated visits by academics and researchers.
