In a continuation of its outstanding rankings performance the University of Sydney is placed 51st in the world in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings and second in Australia.  

The University moved up two ranks overall globally and also ranks first in NSW.

In this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 there are 2, 297 universities ranked across more than 118 countries and regions. The international rankings assess research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook and industry. 

The University currently ranks 55th in the world for research environment and 79th for teaching.  

“Our continuing competitiveness in these prestigious rankings is a credit to all our staff, noting that teaching quality and research environment were two main drivers of our success, a welcome reminder of our ability to deliver on our commitment to excellence in both domains,” said Professor Mark Scott, Vice-Chancellor and President.

Our scores for the separate pillars of Research Environment and Industry showed gains in research reputation, research income and research productivity and industry engagement respectively.

Professor Mike Ryan Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) said, “I commend our researchers on these results which included exceptionally high scores for research excellence and influence (99.9), with the score for patents increasing to 99.9 and industry income improving to 98.6. This speaks to the excellence and importance of our research across all disciplines while underlining the commercial viability of our research.” 

Recent examples of impactful research at the University include:

The University of Sydney ranks 28th in the latest QS World University Rankings and 31st in the US News World Rankings.

In the latest THE subject rankings the University had six disciplines in the global top 50. 

The University secured six subjects in the global top 20 and nineteen in the top 50 in the prestigious ShanghaiRanking’s Global Rankings of Academic Subjects (GRAS), achieving 37 subjects in the top 100.   

In the new Research Collaboration Index, the first global ranking of how universities collaborate, assessed across 1,195 universities in 81 countries, the University of Sydney ranked 19th in the world.
