Neural Markers of Neurodegeneration

Summary

Neurodegeneration affects the brain on a systems level, significantly altering the structure and functional organisation of inter-regional communication across diffuse brain regions. This project aims to model the evolution of structural and functional brain abnormalities and their association with clinical symptoms and functional impairment in patients with dementia and motor neuron disease. Project outcomes seek to: • Improve diagnosis in the earliest stages of disease • Develop novel markers of progression for clinical trials • Advance current understanding of disease propagation

Supervisor

Dr Sicong Tu.

Research location

Camperdown - Brain and Mind Centre

Synopsis

This project uses a multi-modal neuroimaging approach to identify unique longitudinal neural signatures of disease across clinical phenotypes of motor neuron disease and dementia and their associated clinical features. Experimental techniques and expertise that will be taught as part of the project include:

  • Multi-modal neuroimaging
  • Neuropsychological assessment
  • Fluid biomarkers.

Additional information

Sub-components of the project are suitable for prospective Honours students.
