Multi-modal quantification of speech dysfunction in motor neuron disease

Summary

This project will use advanced neuroimaging in combination with speech assessments to characterize and monitor structural and functional changes in the tongue and brain driving speech dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders.

Supervisor

Dr Sicong Tu.

Research location

Camperdown - Brain and Mind Centre

Synopsis

Speech dysfunction represents a significant challenge across neurodegenerative disorders, severely impacting quality of life for patients and their families. Disease mechanisms of speech dysfunction driving development, progression, and association with clinical phenotype, in motor neuron disease (MND) remains poorly understood. The current project will longitudinally characterise speech dysfunction in early-stage MND patients with the aim of: (i) understanding underlying disease mechanisms using a multi-modal approach, (ii) develop a unique database of audio recordings for voice banking, (iii) develop objective disease markers to capture and predict evolving speech dysfunction in MND and associated neurodegenerative disorders.

Additional information

Sub-components of the project are suitable for prospective Honours/Masters students.
