Oral steroids in sciatica: The OASIS Trial

OASIS is a double-blind, randomised controlled trial of oral steroids for the reduction of leg pain severity in sciatica. We will establish whether adequate, sustained doses of oral steroids can effectively reduce pain, and be safe and cost-effective in people with acute sciatica.

Participants will receive one of the interventions (a daily dose of an oral steroid or placebo). Both groups will be asked to complete 6 surveys over 12 months and provide a daily pain score for up to 3 months.

Eligibility

You will not be able to participate in this study if you:

  • have serious spinal pathology
  • have contraindications or precautions to glucocorticoids where risks outweigh potential benefit
  • are planning to undergo spinal surgery
  • had spinal surgery or other interventional procedures (e.g. an epidural injection) in the preceding 6 months
  • have used a systemic glucocorticoid (for any condition) via any method of administration since the start of this episode of sciatica.
