Background

This scholarship was established in 2011 by Mrs Christine Bishop (BA '68; LLB '71; BSc '98) in memory of her husband, His Honour Alan Bishop (BA '60; LLB '64).

1. Background

a. The Alan Bishop Scholarship was established in 2011 by Mrs Christine Bishop, BA '68; LLB '71; BSc '98 in memory of her husband, His Honour Alan Bishop BA '60; LLB '64.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident and be enrolled full-time in their final year of a Bachelor of Laws at the Sydney Law School and have obtained a minimum weighted average mark of 75.

b. Applicants must have at least one semester remaining in their eligible degree program at the time of application.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and a personal statement which demonstrates the applicant’s:

I. leadership skills,
II. communication skills,
III. personal interests,
IV. community engagement,
V. relevant work experience, and
VI. reasons for pursuing a career in law and how they intend to utilise their degree to make a positive contribution to society.

b. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend an interview either in-person or by Skype.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Dean of the Sydney Law School, or their nominee, and at least one other member of staff from the School and a representative of the Scholarship donor. The final decision rests with the University.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued up to $8,000 and the value will be confirmed on the Scholarship Offer Letter.

b. The value will be paid as a one-off payment after the first relevant census date after award. The Scholarship value may be shared if more than one recipient is awarded the Scholarship in any given round.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Associate Dean for Professional Law Programs, or their nominee and it is not transferable for another purpose.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
III. is awarded an alternative primary scholarship. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value, or
IV. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.

6. Other

a. Scholarship recipients may be invited to promote the Sydney Law School at University and corporate networking events.
