Who's eligible

You must:

  • be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney
  • be able to demonstrate financial hardship due to one or more of the below:
    • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015
    • low socio-economic status
    • carer responsibilities
    • long-term medical condition/disability (including ongoing effects of abuse)
    • sole-parent responsibilities
    • regional or remote disadvantage
    • refugee status
    • LGBTIQ+, and/or
    • first in family
  • have been accepted into an approved internship that is determined by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences to complement their current undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. An approved internship must be a minimum of 95 hours
  • commence their internship in the same semester or the following semester from the time they submitted their application for the scholarship.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to students who wish to undertake an internship that complements their studies at the University of Sydney.

b. An internship is a professional work placement that provides students with practical experience that complements their academic studies and sets them up for the graduate workforce. An internship must be for at least 95 hours over the period of the internship.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial hardship due to one or more of the below:

I. identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015,

II. low socio-economic status,

III. carer responsibilities,

IV. long-term medical condition/disability (including ongoing effects of abuse),

V. sole-parent responsibilities,

VI. regional or remote disadvantage,

VII. refugee status,

VIII. LGBTIQ+, and/or

IX. first in family.

c. Applicants must have been accepted into an approved internship that is determined by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences to complement their current undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. An approved internship must be a minimum of 95 hours.

d. Applicants must commence their internship in the same semester or the following semester from the time they submitted their application for the scholarship.

e. Applicants can only receive the scholarship once per internship placement.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. demonstrated evidence of acceptance into an internship and approval from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and

III. a personal statement that demonstrates their financial hardship.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by:

I. the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs, or their nominated delegate,

II. the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Programs, or their nominated delegate, and

III. at least one other academic from each of the Undergraduate Program Sub-Committee and Postgraduate Coursework Sub-Committee.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

d. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. withdraws from the approved internship,

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or

V. does not resume study at the end of their internship or a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
