Who's eligible

You must:

  • be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney
  • be enrolled in COMP4446 (Natural Language Processing)
  • be able to demonstrate Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, and/or be female and/or gender diverse, and/or be culturally and linguistically diverse.

This Scholarship was established in 2022, and was generously donated by Appen Butler Hill Pty Ltd to promote equity, diversity and inclusion and support students undertaking studies in Computational Linguistics within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2022, and was generously donated by Appen Butler Hill Pty Ltd to promote equity, diversity and inclusion and support students undertaking studies in Computational Linguistics within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be enrolled in COMP4446 (Natural Language Processing).

c. The scholarship will be awarded to students on the basis of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion with a preference for students who identify as:

a. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander;
b. Female and/or gender-diverse; and/or
c. Culturally and linguistically diverse.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit.

b. Preference will be given to applicants who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, then female and/or gender-diverse then culturally and linguistically diverse.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School of the School of Computer Science, or their nominated delegates.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum and is tenable for 1 year.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must pass COMP4446 (Natural Language Processing).

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from or fails to enrol in the specified unit of study ,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
