This Scholarship was established in 2022 to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, and to support students undertaking studies in Computational Linguistics within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.
This Scholarship is funded by a donation from Appen Butler Hill Pty Ltd.
1. Background
a. This Scholarship was established in 2022 to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, and to support students undertaking studies in Computational Linguistics within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must be enrolled in COMP4446 (Natural Language Processing).
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit, and
II. a personal statement stating their interest in Computational Linguistics (maximum 200 words).
b. Preference will be given to applicants who identify as one or more of the below:
I. identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015,
II. female and/or gender-diverse, or
III. culturally and linguistically diverse.
c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School of the School of Computer Science, or their nominated delegates.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum and is tenable for 1 year.
b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in one instalment after first semester census date.
c. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another area of study, University school, faculty or university.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing Eligibility
a. The recipient must remain enrolled in COMP4446 (Natural Language Processing).
b. Recipients must continue to be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Engineering.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from or fails to remain enrolled in the specified unit of study during the semester the unit is being completed,
II. commences part-time study,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. accepts an alternative scholarship administered by the Faculty of Engineering or any School within the Faculty of Engineering, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this scholarship. The exception to this is where the recipient is awarded a placement scholarship, in which case this scholarship will be suspended for the duration of the placement. It will be reinstated at the completion of the placement if there is any scholarship candidature remaining. The value of this scholarship for the period of the placement will be forfeited.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
7. Other Requirements
a. Recipients may be invited to meet with the donors.
