Benefits

A recipient enrolled full-time will receive the scholarship valued at $8,500 per annum for up to:

  • 4 years full-time for an eligible undergraduate degree, or
  • 1.5 years full-time for an eligible postgraduate coursework degree.

A recipient enrolled part-time will receive the scholarship valued at $4,250 per annum for up to:

  • 8 years part-time for an eligible undergraduate degree, or
  • 3 years part-time for an eligible postgraduate coursework degree.

This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students commencing a coursework degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

1. Background

a. This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students commencing a coursework degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled in their first semester of an undergraduate degree or postgraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

c. Applicants must not be in receipt of the MySydney Scholarship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of a personal statement of 250-500 words demonstrating how the scholarship will support the applicant’s studies throughout the course of their degree. The personal statement should also describe how applicants have applied themselves to their study.

b. If the applicant’s personal statements are of equal merit, the Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the:

I. Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs or their nominated delegate,

II. Associate Dean of Postgraduate Programs or their nominated delegate, and

III. at least one other academic.

4. Value

a. A recipient enrolled full-time will receive the scholarship valued at $8,500 per annum for up to:

I. 4 years full-time for an eligible undergraduate degree, or

II. 1.5 years full-time for an eligible postgraduate coursework degree.

b. A recipient enrolled part-time will receive the scholarship valued at $4,250 per annum for up to:

III. 8 years part-time for an eligible undergraduate degree, or

IV. 3 years part-time for an eligible postgraduate coursework degree.

c. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

d. Deferral and suspension of the Scholarship is permitted for up to one year with the approval from the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

e. The Scholarship it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 50 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

IV. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for a full-time enrolled recipient or $4,000 per annum or more for a part-time enrolled recipient for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
