A recipient enrolled part-time will receive the scholarship valued at $4,250 per annum for the duration of the course.

  • have an unconditional offer of admission or currently enrolled within the School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney
  • be able to demonstrate financial need.

Background

Established in 2024, the Scholarship has been created from a generous donation in honour of the Donor's father, Griffith Hammond Duncan, for undergraduate students who are experiencing financial need and studying within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2024 to assist students experiencing financial need and studying an undergraduate degree in education at the University of Sydney.

b. This Scholarship has been donated in honour of the Donor’s father Griffith Hammond Duncan.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree coursework degree within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. 

b. Applicants must be an Australian citizen.

c. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, and

II. evidence of financial hardship and/or disadvantage,

III. a personal statement demonstrating how this scholarship will support their studies.

b. Preference will be given to applicants experience financial hardship and/or disadvantage.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School of the Sydney School of Education and Social Work or their nominated delegates. 

4. Value

a. A recipient enrolled full-time will receive the scholarship valued at $8500 per annum for the duration of the degree.

b. A recipient enrolled part-time will receive the scholarship valued at $4,250 er annum for the duration of the degree.

c. The maximum duration of the scholarship is five years (full-time).

d. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. 

e. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School, Sydney School of Education and Social Work. 

f. The scholarship is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval. 

g. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

h. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester. 

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment. 

c. Where the University is satisfied that there are special circumstances (including but not limited to serious illness, domestic violence, financial circumstance, or death of a family member), the Scholarships Office in consultation with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences may waive conditions 5a and 5b.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval, 

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, unless clause 5c prevails.

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
