The Gwen & David Moore Aboriginal Scholarship was established in 2015 and is funded by a trust established under the will of David Rainsford Moore. The scheme was established to assist persons of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent to enable them to undertake tertiary studies applicable to their heritage.
1. Background
a. The Gwen & David Moore Aboriginal Scholarship was established in 2015 and is funded by a trust established under the will of David Rainsford Moore. The scheme was established to ‘assist persons of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent to enable them to undertake tertiary studies applicable to their heritage’.
b. The ongoing management of this scholarship will be maintained by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in consultation with the Trustee.
2. Eligibility
a. Application for a scholarship is open to all students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who are enrolled full-time in undergraduate study within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must be enrolled in units of study towards a major in one of the following areas:
I. Archaeology
II. Anthropology
III. History
IV. Sociology,
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. a personal statement of not more than 500 words outlining the reason for pursuing a major in one the of the following areas with a focus on Aboriginal Heritage: Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or Sociology;
II. be enrolled in units of study towards a major in one of the following areas with a focus on Aboriginal Heritage: Archaeology, Anthropology, History or Sociology
III. ability to demonstrate their eligibility under the grounds of the scholarship, that is be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander descent;
IV. be available for interview if required.
b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of the Arts and Social Sciences, with approval from the Trustee on the recommendation of a selection committee, comprising of:
I. Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs
II. Chair of Archaeology
III. Chair of Anthropology
IV. Chair of History and
V. Chair of Sociology or their nominated delegates
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $36, 323 per annum and is tenable up to four years for one undergraduate student. The Scholarship will provide the following benefits:
I. $20,000 stipend allowance and
II. $16,323 contribution towards tuition
b. The stipend allowance annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing eligibility
a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 50 each semester.
b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.
c. Ongoing annual payments of the scholarship must be approved by the Trustee.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated, in consultation with the Trustee, if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or area of study as outlined in clause 2b or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
7. Other requirements
a. The scholarship recipient will be required to provide a report for each year of the scholarship. The report must outline their area of study and include the grades attained.
