Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an international student
  • be currently enrolled in a postgraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney
  • have a reasonable expectation of completion of their degree within the next six months
  • demonstrate financial hardship.

Background

The Scholarship will provide financial assistance to international students in their final semester of a postgraduate coursework degree where the student can demonstrate they are experiencing significant financial hardship and are unable to pay their final semester of course fees.

1. Background

a. The Scholarship will provide financial assistance to international students in their final semester of a postgraduate coursework degree where the student can demonstrate they are experiencing significant financial hardship and are unable to pay their final semester of course fees.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a postgraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must have a reasonable expectation of completion of their degree within the next 6 months.

c. Applicants must be an international student.

d. Applicants must demonstrate financial hardship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. demonstrated financial hardship, and

III. a personal statement that:

i. details their financial hardship, and

ii. details how the scholarship will assist them in completing their degree.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of the:

I. The Associate Dean of Postgraduate Programs 

II. and at least two academics from the Postgraduate Coursework Sub-Committee

4. Value

a. The Scholarship will have a maximum value of $15,000 for up to one semester.

b. The exact value of the Scholarship will be outlined in the successful recipient(s) Scholarship Offer Letter.

c. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment after the applicable census date.

d. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted.

e. The scholarship may not be suspended.

f. The scholarship is not transferable.

g. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

h. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or

IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
