The Rosemary Samios Research Awards in Celtic Studies

1. Background

a. This award has been established to provide support for research in the area of Celtic studies for postgraduate students or academic staff.

b. This award is funded by a donation by Mrs Rosemary Samios.

2. Eligibility

a. This award is offered subject to applicants being currently enrolled in a Masters by Research or PhD within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants’ research may be based in and focussed on any discipline within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences but must pertain to Celtic languages, culture or history.

c. Applicants must be applying for project or activity funding to be used for expenses detailed in Clauses 4.c and 4.d that they expect to incur within twelve months from award opening date.

d. Recipients are eligible to apply again for the award, for a different purpose to their first award, but not in the same calendar year.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The award will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic excellence and merit,
II. curriculum vitae,
III. budget summary and justification, and
IV. the research project or activity including:

i. summary,
ii. relevance, significance and innovativeness,
iii. approach and methodology,
iv. outcome and impact, and
v. any potential collaboration with relevant University of Sydney Centres and Multidisciplinary Initiatives or other entities external to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

b. A research project or activity which is likely to contribute towards a recognised research output will be highly regarded.

c. The award will be made by a selection committee including the:

I. McCaughey Professor of Early English Literature and Language or their nominated delegate, and
II. at least two other academics in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

d. If any conflict of interest should arise, the award will be awarded by the Head of School, School of Art Communication and English on recommendation from the selection committee.

4. Value

a. The award will have a maximum value of $20,000. The exact value of the award shall be determined by the selection committee and outlined in the recipient’s Award Offer Letter.

b. The value of the award will be paid in a lump sum payment on receipt of the Award Acceptance Form.

c. The award will fund expenses such as:

I. travel for primary research,
II. research assistance,
III. purchase and/or reproduction of research materials, or
IV. activities to showcase research outputs.

d. The committee will also consider funding for:

I. marking relief,
II. conference-related expenses,
III. visits to the University by scholarly experts, or
IV. holding of conferences and seminars in a relevant field.

e. The award will not fund teaching relief or the purchase of computers, audio visual equipment or similar hardware.

f. Deferral and/or suspension of the award is not permitted except in exceptional circumstances and must be approved by the Selection Committee.

g. The award is not transferable to another area of research.

h. The award will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

i. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The award will terminate:

I. on resignation or withdrawal of the student from their research degree,
II. upon submission of the thesis or at the end of the award,
III. upon the student having completed the maximum candidature for their degree as per the University of Sydney (Higher Degree by Research) Rule 2011 Policy,
IV. if the recipient does not undertake the relevant project or activity for which the funds have been approved within the required time frame,
V. if the recipient does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
VI. if the recipient ceases to meet the eligibility requirements specified for this award, (other than during a period in which the award has been suspended or during a period of approved leave).

b. The award may also be terminated by the University before this time if, in the opinion of the University:

I. the course of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the terms of this offer,
II. the student fails to maintain satisfactory progress, or
III. the student has committed misconduct or other inappropriate conduct.

c. The award will be suspended throughout the duration of any enquiry/appeal process.

d. Once the award has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

6. Reporting

a. The recipient is required to provide a report at the conclusion of their project or activities in Scotland.

b. The recipient may be invited to attend promotional activities for Celtic Studies at the University of Sydney.
