Background

Walter and Eliza Hall were active philanthropists during their life together. Following her husband’s death, Eliza set up a million pound charitable trust in 1912 called the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust as a means of assisting those in need. Since that time the trust has helped thousands of Australians to reach their full potential.

Since that time the trust has helped thousands of Australians to reach their full potential.

2. Eligibility

Applicants must:

a. be an Australian Citizen, and

b. are commencing or continuing full-time study in field of Education in a Commonwealth Supported Place, and

c. are from a financially disadvantaged background, and

d. with a view to study in the area of Special Needs Education, and

e. consent to provide their application to the Trust.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. financial disadvantage, and

III. a personal statement.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of members nominated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $10,000 and is tenable for the duration of the degree up to three years.

b. Total value of the scholarship is up to $30,000.

c. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

d. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. The Scholarship cannot be used to pay for travel expenses.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

c. The recipient is required to provide a yearly report to the Scholarships Office by mid-December detailing their progress and how the scholarship has assisted their studying.

6. Other Requirements

a. The recipient's name and correspondence address will be notified to the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust.

7. Termination

b. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval,

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

V. is awarded an alternative primary scholarship. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value,

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

c. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated.

d. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
