If you are unable to complete your research by your completion date, you may be able to extend your candidature.
You can apply for an extension of up to four research periods (one year). This can only be done within six months of your required submission date.
You should first discuss your proposed extension and revised research schedule with your supervisor.
Your application should contain:
This request will be noted in your annual progress report.
Submit your request through RECS. Go to ‘My project’, ‘Candidature maintenance’, 'Start new request' and then select ‘Extension’ and complete the required form.
Once your request has been assessed we will contact you about the outcome. You will also be able to track the status of your request in RECS.
International students are required to provide supporting documents as part of their application.
If your extension is approved, you may also need to apply for an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) extension on the Sydney Student portal. If you have any questions about your student visa conditions or eCoE, please contact our compliance officers student.compliance@sydney.edu.au or consult with the Department of Home Affairs Department of Home Affairs website.
If your extension is approved and you are also a recipient of a scholarship, postgraduate research support scheme or financial assistance from the University you should contact the Higher Degree by Research Administration Centre to confirm the end date of your payments.
If your extension is approved, you may exceed the maximum entitlement period under the Research Training Program (RTP). For this reason, you are encouraged to complete your studies before your latest completion date. You can confirm your remaining RTP and latest completion date in Sydney Student. Your latest date for submission can be viewed in the 'My project' section in RECS.
