Landmark occasion as Dalyell Scholars come together

The Dalyell Scholars program has inducted its first ever cohort of high-achieving students who earned an ATAR of 98 or above in their HSC exams.

Students enrolled in the Dalyell stream will have access to a range of opportunities throughout their degree, including enrichment units, professional development and networking opportunities, and global mobility scholarships. The program is a major part of Sydney’s reimagined undergraduate curriculum.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Pip Pattison and Student Ambassador Deirdre Mair addressed the packed-out Great Hall, congratulating the first-year students on their achievements and encouraging them to look forward to the many opportunities ahead.

The Dalyell Scholars scheme is named after Elsie Jean Dalyell (1881–1948), who was the first full-time female academic in the Faculty of Medicine.

“Elsie Dalyell embraced opportunity and was able to turn immense challenge into new thinking and solutions that improved lives. Our aspiration is that the Dalyell scholars will do the same and will begin by embracing the opportunities within the new curriculum and within the Dalyell Scholars program itself,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Pip Pattison.
