Climate resilience narratives: cross-continental exploration

18 April 2024
Dr Justin See has been awarded new research funding.
The “Stories of Resilience" project aims to amplify voices from Global South, shaping climate-resilient pathways with community input, supported by the British Academy Official Development Assistance (ODA) International Interdisciplinary Research Grant.

In a bid to transcend Eurocentric perspectives on climate resilient development, the "Stories and Imaginaries of Resilience and Progress in a Changing Climate" project has been launched.

Led from the University of Manchester in the UK, the project is a collaboration between a diverse team of scholars spanning continents. Supported by the British Academy Official Development Assistance (ODA) International Interdisciplinary Research Grant, it aims to amplify local voices from the ‘Global South’, particularly in the Philippines, in shaping climate-resilient pathways.

Sydney Environment Institute member Dr Justin See forms part of the research team, which is led by Dr Angela Minas from the University of Manchester in the UK, with partners Ginbert Permejo Cuaton from Lingnan University in Hong Kong, and Dakila Kim Yee from the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College.

Dr See will lead a work package that will pioneer a methodology in the development of climate resilient development indicators that are based on the knowledge, goals, and aspirations of local residents.

The project seeks to explore oral histories, digital narratives, and participatory activities like storytelling and collaborative workshops. By integrating community aspirations for 'a good life,' the initiative aims to foster inclusive and locally grounded climate resilient development pathways.

This collaboration between the University of Manchester, Sydney Environment Institute, Lingnan University, and the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College promises to broaden the discourse on climate resilience, ensuring that voices from the Global South are integral in shaping our collective response to climate change.
