Early Career Researcher Residential Writing Retreat

Dedicating time and space to write productively and with enjoyment
Early career researchers working on Southeast Asia at the University of Sydney are invited to attend SSEAC’s inaugural residential writing retreat, designed to provide you with the physical and mental space to write as part of a community of like-minded scholars from a broad range of disciplines.

Who: Early Career Researchers with interests in Southeast Asia at the University of Sydney or with a formal research-focused affiliation with the University of Sydney
When: 8:30-17:30, 5-7 February 2020
Where: HC Coombs Centre, Kirribilli, Sydney

For early career researchers, finding time to commit to writing can be difficult. When faced with many competing obligations, writing is often the first casualty. In this residential writing retreat, we offer you the opportunity to go deep into your writing for three solid days, providing you with the time, space and support to write.

The retreat program – which includes large blocks of structured writing time interspersed with facilitated workshops, informal discussions and debriefing sessions – will provide participants with:

  • A chance to connect with early career researchers from across the University
  • An opportunity to reflect on your own writing habits and productivity
  • Deeper insights into writing-related elements of academic life, including giving insightful and constructive feedback
  • The time and space to make meaningful progress on an academic output (grant application, article or similar)

Ten early career researchers can be accommodated in residence. Additional places may be made available for academics with caring responsibilities that preclude overnight stays.

The selection process will take disciplinary spread, country focus and gender balance into account. Please note that submission of an application constitutes a commitment to be available from 8:30-5:30 each day for the full 3 days of the retreat (on a residential or non-residential basis).

Applications are now closed.
