AMME1802: Engineering Mechanics

Semester 2, 2022 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

The unit aims to provide students with an understanding of and competence in solving statics and introductory dynamics problems in engineering. Tutorial sessions will help students to improve their group work and problem solving skills, and gain competency in extracting a simplified version of a problem from a complex situation. Emphasis is placed on the ability to work in 3D as well as 2D, including the 2D and 3D visualisation of structures and structural components, and the vectorial 2D and 3D representations of spatial points, forces and moments. Introduction to kinematics and dynamics topics includes position, velocity and acceleration of a point; relative motion, force and acceleration, momentum, collisions and energy methods.

Assessment summary

Long Quizzes 80%:

               There will be 3 long quizzes, each lasting 1.0-1.5 hours. These will be conducted online on a Friday afternoon in Weeks 4, 9 and 13 (See the timetable and Canvas for exact timing). The Long Quizzes will be based on the material covered up to and including the previous Friday’s lecture. These Quizzes will be online, and links and further details will be available on the Unit of Study Canvas. Please note that the students are expected to have access to scanning devices/apps to upload the written solutions. 

  • Long Quiz 1:       5:30-6:30 PM, Friday, 26 August 2022    (Week 4),                              20%        (1.0 hr quiz)

Online Quizzes 20%:

              There will be 12 online quizzes released from Week 1 to Week 12. Students will be given one week to independently complete an online Quiz available on Canvas (https://canvas.sydney.edu.au  ). To complete an Online Quiz, go to the Canvas site for AMME1802. On the left menu, click on “Pearson Access” to access the Online Quizzes. Each Quiz is worth 2% of the final mark. However, the final mark will be calculated using the 10 best marks out of the 12 attempted Quizzes. A new quiz will be released at 9 AM each Wednesday, and this same quiz will be closed at 9 AM the following Wednesday.

Assessment criteria

Assessment marks for all problems will be based upon:

  • The layout of the solution and diagrams (communication)
  • Solution method (clearly showing the student's understanding of principles)
  • Correct answer

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance at tutorial sessions is compulsory and will be recorded.  If you are not at the correct tutorial (as per your University generated timetable), you will be marked absent.  For each tutorial hour that you miss, you will be penalised 1% of your final mark. If you miss more than 15% of the tutorials (4 hours for the semester), you will not have met the attendance requirements and may fail the unit of study with a maximum mark of 45%.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

In 2022, in response to students' feedback, we have reduced the tutorial attendance requirements per week from 3 hours to 2 hours. We have also added pre-recorded tutorials and videos of worked solutions to select problems. We have also incorporated changes to the ways students receive feedback regarding their performance in various assessments, including personalized messages and feedback from the unit coordinator.
