ANAT3907: Visceral Anatomy (Advanced)

Semester 1, 2025 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the clinical and functional anatomy of the viscera in the human body. The focus is on the organ systems in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis (respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, and autonomic nervous systems) and their functional integration with each other. Through the course practicals and workshops, students will acquire a 3-dimensional understanding of the human body and be able to apply this to cross-sectional, imaging, and clinical anatomy. As an advanced student you will also have the opportunity to engage with your colleagues through teaching, generating new ideas and informally presenting to the cohort. Students will study prosected wet cadaveric specimens, models, bones, and medical images. Relevant clinical and functional anatomy is discussed in lecture and practical sessions and are the focus of special workshop sessions designed to allow students to apply the course content via clinical scenarios. Other workshops are designed to analyze topographical, imaging, and cross-sectional anatomy of the respective regions through the study of MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray medical images. The weekly format is a one hour lecture, two hour wet lab practical and a one hour workshop. This Unit of Study serves as a suitable preparation for Graduate Programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Physical therapies, Forensic sciences, and other applied para-clinical and clinical fields. Successful completion of this Unit will provide students with a substantial understanding of Human Anatomy to support Post-Graduate careers in the fields of Biomedical Research, Innovation and Development.

Assessment summary

A1.W3 - module 1 lecture content assessed by online quiz on MCQs pulled from a bank of questions (10 minutes to complete). No AI permitted.

A1.W5 - module 2 content assessed in person, in class. Will involve labelling images & figures, hand drawing and written task. This will be completed and submitted during the 1.5hrs allocated. No AI use permitted.

A2.W10 - module 2 content assessed in person, in class. Will involve producing a creative piece of work that fuses, art, science and medicine. This will be completed and submitted during the 1.5hrs allocated. Limited AI will be permitted.

A3.W13 - module 3 content assessed in person, on campus. Will be a quiz containig a mix of SAQ and extended answer questions. No AI permitted.

Final Practical Exam - will assess the anatomy practical class content in person, on campus. This will be an anatomy spot test examining and identifying features on human cadaveric prosections and X-ray, CT & MRI images. No AI permitted.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

Except for supervised exams or in-semester tests, you may use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessments unless expressly prohibited by your unit coordinator. 

For exams and in-semester tests, the use of AI and automated writing tools is not allowed unless expressly permitted in the assessment instructions. 

The icons in the assessment table above indicate whether AI is allowed – whether full AI, or only some AI (the latter is referred to as “AI restricted”). If no icon is shown, AI use is not permitted at all for the task. Refer to Canvas for full instructions on assessment tasks for this unit. 

Your final submission must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of automated writing tools or generative AI, and any material generated that you include in your final submission must be properly referenced. You may be required to submit generative AI inputs and outputs that you used during your assessment process, or drafts of your original work. If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

From Week 1 (February 24), students enrolled in this unit are required to actively engage with all face-to-face and online content as outlined on the Canvas site. This includes the completion of independent learning activities and submission of any formative tasks.

All teaching activities are conducted face-to-face (F2F).

Attendance is compulsory for 80% of Practicals and 80% of Workshops. Students whose attendance falls below 80% (without prior approval from the Unit of Study Coordinator) may receive an Absent Fail (AF) grade.

An Absent Fail (AF) grade will be awarded to students who fail to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard through failure to submit or attend compulsory assessment tasks or to attend classes to the required level.

 

 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Work, health and safety

Practical Classes:

You will need gloves, gown  & appropriate footwear (closed shoes covering ENTIRE dorsum of the foot, not sandals, ballet flats or thongs).  Correct protective clothing is not only a University requirement, it is also part Work, Health & Safety (WHS) policy.  Students who do not have protective clothing will not be allowed into the anatomy tutorial rooms.

The Anatomy Act requires you to WEAR identification when you are in the tutorial rooms.  This should be your student card inserted into a clear holder (we supply one holder per students (if you lose a holder you can buy another from the Prosectory cost - $1). 

COVID-19, in addition to the above PPE students may choose to wear a mask in the practical classes, workshops and forums.
