The Julio-Claudian emperors were Rome's first imperial dynasty: they ruled during a fascinating and important period of tension, experiment and negotiation between the emperor, senate, and people of Rome. This period saw wars of expansion, revolt and resistance; and at Rome new concepts of power and competition emerged to transform politics. This unit examines politics, society and culture during the reigns of the emperors Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. It will pay close attention to the ancient sources for this period and the problems they present to the ancient historian.
