Students acquire knowledge of normal cognition and the cognitive neuropsychological approach to brain-behaviour relationships and cognitive processes; the cognitive and behavioural consequences of brain damage and models of cognitive rehabilitation.

Assessment summary

Please note: Assessments for this unit are different to those listed in the Handbook and have been updated to reflect changes in unit delivery due to the current COVID-19 situation

  • Group presentation (30%): Students will pre-record a 20 minute group presentation in groups of 3-4 members (5-6 minutes each).  Each group will be allocated a specific condition to discuss. 
  • Online Activities (30%): A series of online activities, as follows: 

    PART ONE (10%): Online Concept Glossary covering the foundational concepts of cognitive neuropsychology

    PART TWO (20%): Group Presentation Quizzes.  Each week the group presenting will also prepare a 5 item multiple choice quiz related to their topic and material for the audience to complete.  Over the course of the semester students must complete 4 of these quizzes (each worth 5%).

  • Essay (40%): Students will write up a 1500 word rehabilitation plan for a mock patient with a focal cognitive deficit.  The rehabilitation plan must be based on known theories of cognitive function and cognitive rehabilitation.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

This unit has an exception to the standard University policy or supplementary information has been provided by the unit coordinator. This information is displayed below:

Unless an application for special consideration or special arrangement has been approved, students must submit all assessment for a unit of study on the due date specified in the unit of study outline. If the assessment is completed or submitted within an approved period of extension by way of an approved special consideration application, academic plan adjustment or informal simple extension (approved in writing), no academic penalty will be applied to that piece of assessment. If an assessment is submitted after the due date (or extended due date as described above), the late submission of assessment will result in an academic penalty as follows: 1. Written work submitted electronically after 11.59 pm on the due date will be considered to have been submitted late. 2. For every calendar day up to and including ten calendar days after the due date, a penalty of 5% of the maximum awardable marks will be applied to late work. For work submitted more than ten calendar days after the due date a mark of zero will be awarded. Note, all assessments must be submitted in order to be eligible to pass the unit otherwise an AF (Absent Fail) grade will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website  provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.  

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

All lectures and tutorials will be offered fully online. 

Students are expected to view the pre-recorded weekly lecture, and to join a weekly tutorial via Zoom.  Please refer to the Canvas site for more information. 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. describe the key assumptions and methodologies of neuropsychology and cognitive neuropsychology
  • LO2. interpret patterns of impaired cognitive performance with reference to models of attention, language, memory, and executive function
  • LO3. use models of cognitive neuropsychology as a basis for understanding recovery, rehabilitation, and therapeutic outcomes after brain injury
  • LO4. justify strategies for working with children, adults, and older adults with neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative and acquired brain injury, based on an understanding of likely cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • LO5. evaluate the typical profile of cognitive function in brain disorders not considered in the lecture series and apply this information for classification, assessment, prognosis, treatment options, and rehabilitation opportunities for individuals working with these clinical populations
  • LO6. demonstrate development of spoken and written communication skills, and academic writing.

The weighting of the Group Presentations has been increased to reflect the amount of work students complete. The weighting and word count of the Essay have been reduced, to encourage a more focused submission. Quizzes based on the student presentations have been incorporated, to foster deeper engagement bythe audience in the learning material
