This unit of study provides an introduction to the field of biomedical engineering, from the point of view of the engineering and the global biomedical industry itself. After completion of this unit, students will have a clear understanding of what biomedical engineering is, both from the engineering perspective and the commercial/industry perspective.

Assessment summary

Quiz: Canvas based quiz where students will answer questions covering lecture material and may take the form of multiple choice, true/false, matching questions, and short answer questions. It worth 10% of the total marks.

Industry Report: one short report (about 2-3 pages) based on independent research on a biomedical company of your choice. The report will be focused on articulating industry needs and pathways for growth and this will be assessed for 10% of total marks based on a rubric published in the Canvas.

Logbook: A regularly updated document that details an individual’s personal contributions to different aspects for the group project.This logbook which will be assessed in Week 4 (5%),8 (8%),and 13(12%) against a rubric (published in Canvas)  and this assessment accounts for 25% of the total marks.

EA Design Task: A short report (about 1-2 pages) that will focus on reflecting on all the three different Modules in the Design Task that has been listed under Biomedical Engineering Virtual Experience in Engineer Australia Website. You have to upload the certificaltion of completion of this task together with the screen shot of your response for the task under each of the modules (3 modules in total).  The task will be assessed for 5% of total marks based on a rubric published in the Canvas

Technical Design Report*: A detailed biomedical device design report, to be developed in a team. Submissions will be progressive. A progress report worth 10% will be used to provide feedback for the final report which accounts for 25% of the total marks.

MedTech Innovation Presentation*: A team video presentation of the device design. This assessment accounts for 15% of the total marks.

*Spark Plus will be incorporated with the group tasks to moderate individual's mark within the group.information for each assessment can be found on Canvas.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2021 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

To be awarded to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at a very high standard as defined by grade descriptors or exemplars established by the faculty.

65 - 74

To be awarded to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at a good standard as defined by grade descriptors or exemplars established by the faculty.

Pass

50 - 64

To be awarded to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard as defined by grade descriptors or exemplars established by the faculty.

Fail

0 - 49

To be awarded to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, fail to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard established by the faculty. This grade, with corresponding mark, should also be used in cases where a student fails to achieve a mandated standard in a compulsory assessment, thereby failing to demonstrate the learning outcomes to a satisfactory standard. In such cases the student will receive the mark awarded by the faculty up to a maximum of 49.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

This unit has an exception to the standard University policy or supplementary information has been provided by the unit coordinator. This information is displayed below:

A late penalty of 5% of the maximum awardable marks will be applied per day (or part thereof). After 10 calendar days, work will not be marked and will receive a zero.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website  provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.  

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of all timetabled activities.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
