Chemistry transforms the way we live. It provides the basis for understanding biological, geological and atmospheric processes, how medicines work, the properties of materials and substances, how beer is brewed, and for obtaining forensic evidence. This unit of study builds upon your prior knowledge of chemistry to further develop your knowledge and skills in chemistry for broad application, including further study in chemistry. You will learn about organic chemistry reactions, structural determination, nitrogen chemistry, industrial processes, kinetics, electrochemistry, thermochemistry, phase behaviour, solubility equilibrium and chemistry of metals. You will further develop your ability to design, execute, and analyse chemical experiments that investigate the molecular principles of processes around you. You will explore questions like how do we facilitate energetically favourable reactions, how do we extract bioactive molecules from plants, or how do we design efficient electrochemical cells? Through structured inquiry—formulating hypotheses, collecting data via observation and measurement, and interpreting data —you will gain deeper insights into the physical world and learn to apply those insights to tackle real-world challenges. Chemistry 1B is built on a satisfactory prior knowledge of Chemistry 1A.

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.
The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
