CHNG5605: Bio-Products: Laboratory to Marketplace

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic and rapidly growing bioproduct industry, encompassing pharmaceuticals, biomedical devices, diagnostics, and health-related food products. Students will explore the scientific, engineering, regulatory, and commercial aspects involved in transforming innovative discoveries into products that improve human health and wellbeing. The unit of study offers insights into product design, formulation and delivery systems, manufacturing technologies, quality assurance, and product performance. Students will develop an understanding of how a broad range of health-related products are developed, evaluated, and brought to market, from concept and laboratory research through to commercial production and global distribution. Key topics include clinical and product evaluation studies, regulatory pathways, commercialization strategies, intellectual property protection, market access, and innovation management. Students will also learn about Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), quality systems, and international regulatory frameworks that govern the manufacture, safety, and market approval of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and food-related products. Lectures will be delivered by University of Sydney academics together with experienced professionals from industry, regulatory agencies, and the biotechnology sector, providing students with valuable exposure to real-world applications and career pathways. Where feasible, site visits to biomanufacturing and technology companies will be arranged, enabling students to observe industry practices firsthand.

Assessment summary

  • Quizzes: There will be different sets of questions including multiple-choice, descriptive answers and short-answer tests based on the lectures, additional materials and set of questions that are given to students during the semester.
  • The tests are open-book and include topics covered during classes and/or in suggested readings.
  • Group project final report: Groups will be nominated in week 2 and they will select topics that will be provided in canvas.  The group need to spend approximately 5 hours each week on this project to ensure they can submit a comprehensive report and presentation by week 13.
  • Each group also need to submit a short report in week 7 (details are provided in Canvas). There may be an interview after the submission of report to make sure that the tasks for projects are clear. Further details for submission of report are available in course outline/cnavas.  
  • Detailed information for each assessment can be found on Canvas.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Study commitment: Project work is to be completed in student’s own time. Students are expected to spend about seven hours of study per week outside the specified contact period.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO6. analyse production requirements and determine appropriate manufacturing process stages for a given food or biomedical product.
