The rationale behind this unit of study is to explore fundamental concepts of music as related to composition for the creative industries. The creative industries cover a broad range of arts practices across both the commercial and experimental landscapes, and everything in-between. Music composition is used across a huge variety, and ever expanding, range of contexts from film and television to gaming, immersive experiences, dance, theatre, advertising and more. Compositional technique lays the foundation for composers to excel across an ever-expanding range of contexts and allows for a broad skill set which can be applied to any genre/situation. Through developing a toolkit of compositional skills composers will be encouraged to use critical thinking skills to apply their skills across various contexts. This unit will build a ‘toolbox’ of critical compositional skills whilst delving into the required digital literacy in both notation software and digital audio workstations.
