Understanding mechanisms and progression of disease to improve human health and quality of life are some of the great challenges facing modern medical sciences in the 21st century. The Pathogenesis of Human Disease 2 (Advanced) unit of study will provide an integrated theoretical and practical environment to investigate the scientific basis of the pathogenesis of systemic diseases. By considering systemic pathophysiology as the intersection of disease processes and scientifically validated approaches to diagnose, you will be exposed to anatomical pathology, genetic pathology and clinical (chemical) pathology. Building upon the foundational knowledge you've gained, this unit will allow you to explore the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, haematological disorders, endocrinopathies, and diseases of the hepatobiliary and oral and maxillofacial system. In the Advanced offering (CPAT3902), you will have the opportunity to extend your knowledge through laboratory placements in either a pre-clinical or clinical setting, to expand your microscopic (Köhler illumination and digital microscopy) and macroscopic specimen evaluation to the research and clinical community using appropriate terminology. This unit of study is appropriate for those who intend to proceed to Honours research, to postgraduate studies such as Medicine or Dentistry or to careers in biomedical areas such as hospital science.
