CSCD2067: Introductory Practice 2: Community

Semester 2, 2023 [Professional practice] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Students are paired and conduct observations and activities in a preschool, or long day care centre, as well as engage and collaborate with staff. Students will understand how language is used and targeted as a part of the curriculum in preschool settings and develop professional skills in carrying out language stimulation activities with preschool children. They will use critical reflection to relate observations to current theory and evidence. This unit requires students to develop self-awareness, and consider issues directly related to clinical practice in the areas of professional and community collaborations, and relationships with families and other professionals. Students also identify, reflect, and manage ethical issues, working with children, families, and professionals. Students will develop strategies for facilitating a child's learning. Indigenous issues in health service delivery and the provision of culturally safe practice is addressed, as are basic report writing, record keeping, and case presentation skills. Students will gain knowledge regarding compliance policies and procedures of the on-campus clinic, and government legislation.

Assessment summary

  • Compulsory attendance at Orientation, Sim Lab and all tutorials & professional practice activities : Attendance at all orientation activities, Sim Lab professional Practice placement (CDTRC) and all associated briefings/ clinical activities including CE team supervision meetings (clinical tutorials) is required to support student learning on placement. For students who have not passed the assessment (achieved satisfactory on the Professional Practice Competency Checklist), they will fail the entire unit and receive remediation support.
  • Clinical paperwork: Students must complete relevant online forms associated with WHS and practice placements in SONIA (professional practice data base) and canvas including professional practice hours.
  • Life stages assignment: Students work in pairs to interview an unfamiliar older adult, produce a 5 minute video role play of a follow up discussion/feedback and complete a conversation map scaffold. . Students who have not passed this assignment are allowed one resubmission.
  • Child assessment report: Students complete an assignment based on a narrative sample collected with a 4-6 year old child. Students will be given scenarios to choose from. Students are encouraged to adopt a holistic client perspective and use their theoretical and clinical knowledge to draw accurate conclusions about a child. Students who have not passed this assignment are allowed one resubmission.
  • Workplace Spreadsheet & Reflection Students write a 500 word reflection on their experiences in Intro Prac in relation to the professional standards. Students update their workplace spreadsheet.

Students are required to complete all assessment tasks to pass the unit of study.

The pass grade for this clinical unit is SR (Satisfactory Requirements). To be awarded a SR grade, it is vital that all paperwork is submitted by the due date. Grades awarded for this unit of study are either SR (pass) or FR (failed requirements). Failure of one item may result in failure of the entire UOS and students who are required to repeat a clinical UOS will be required to complete the entire UOS and all assessment activities. If the student fails an assignment-based barrier task, they must contact the unit coordinator for feedback within 10 working days of being advised of the decision. The student is allowed one resubmission only for the task. If the student fails the resubmission, their fail grade (FR) for this unit of study will stand. If the student passes the resubmission, their grade will be changed to a pass (SR) for the unit of study.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website  provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Co-created with students, AI in Education includes lots of helpful examples of how students use generative AI tools to support their learning. It explains how generative AI works, the different tools available and how to use them responsibly and productively.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Clinical placements are scheduled from March - November. This unit of study consists of a 2-hour lecture a week and a 12 week placement for at least one hour per week (or equivalent to a minimum total of 12 hours attendance) at a preschool and an online preschool program. Days of attendance at the placement site are to be negotiated between students and preschool directors/supervisors. Students are paired and are expected to attend at least 3 separate visits to the preschool and all allocated online preschool sessions. Students are expected to undertake all components of this unit of study to their completion and in their entirety.

Students are supported with information in orientation/ briefing sessions during the year prior to their attendance at the placement and regular meetings during the placement. This is supplemented by the Introductory Practice: Clinic and Community Canvas site. All briefing sessions and meetings are compulsory.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Aged care assignment has been changed due to difficulties with procuring placements

This unit of study may require you to attend a teaching activity timetabled in teaching venues installed with the University’s Clinical Recording and Observation System (CROS) in the Susan Wakil Health Building. Students should be aware of the privacy and information management implications of this system. For more information, please refer to the University’s Privacy Statement.

Work, health and safety

Students must complete a work health and safety checklist with their clinical educator during the first week of placement.

Students must be fully verified through NSW Health and have a valid police check and WWCC.

The Public Health (COVID-19 Vaccination of Health Care Workers) Order 2021 directs that a healthcare worker – including students, volunteers and those undertaking administrative duties - must not do work as a healthcare worker unless they have received:

  • at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before 30 September 2021, and
  • at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine  before 30 November 2021

This is a requirement for health care workers within NSW Health and private health facilities, or others so directed by the Chief Health Officer, and the vaccine must be one that is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
