DECO2102: Introduction to Interface Design

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit introduces students to principles and fundamentals of interface design in emerging technologies. Following a human-centered design approach, this unit of study provides students with an understanding of industry standard principles for user interface design. Students will gain practical skills for prototyping and testing interactive interfaces through the application of tools and techniques for a variety of different platforms. For example, students will learn how to create low-fidelity prototypes using wireframes for web and mobile user interfaces. The aim is to develop appreciation of visual design principles and their impact on the usability and user experience of interactive products.

Early feedback task

This unit includes an early feedback task, designed to give you feedback prior to the census date for this unit. Details are provided in the Canvas site and your result will be recorded in your Marks page. It is important that you actively engage with this task so that the University can support you to be successful in this unit.

Assessment summary

In this unit, you will need to complete ten quizzes, and three design assessments. The weighting of these assessments and their due dates are detailed in the table below. All assessments in this unit must be completed individually, except for Assessment 2, which is completed in small groups.

In-class quizzes (A1) will be available from Monday and must be submitted by 11:59pm the same day. They will be delivered via Canvas.

The first design assessment (A2) will be a Conceptual Design Video Presentation of your design direction, completed in small groups.

The second design assessment (A3) will be a Design Development Report, documenting your design's development through iteration and feedback.

The third design assessment (A4) will be a Final Design Presentation — a live, in-class pitch of your finished design.

All assignments must be uploaded by the due dates specified on Canvas.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

If you use AI, you must always acknowledge it. Misusing AI may lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

It is expected that unless a simple extension, special consideration or disability adjustment has been granted, students will submit all assessment items for a unit of study on the due dates specified. If an assessment is submitted or otherwise completed within a period of extension granted by successful application for simple extension, special consideration or an assessment adjustment determined by Disability Services, no academic penalty will be applied to that piece of assessment. If an extension is not sought, not granted, or is granted but work is submitted after the extended due date, the late submission of assessment will result in an academic penalty as follows: late submission is allowed within 10 days past the due date, with 5% penalty applied per day.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Students are expected to attend at least 90% of timetabled tutorials, in accordance with the School’s Resolutions. In DECO2102, tutorials are where you apply lecture concepts through hands-on design work, receive feedback from your tutor and classmates, and make progress on your design project.

Attendance will be recorded throughout the semester. Where attendance falls below 90%, the Unit Coordinator may exercise discretion under the School’s Resolutions. This may include considering whether your attendance has affected your ability to demonstrate the unit’s learning outcomes or, where appropriate, requiring additional assessment.

In-person lecture attendance and engagement with lecture recordings may also be monitored. Most of the foundational content for this unit is delivered through lectures, and tutorials do not repeat this material. The terminology, concepts, and methods introduced and explained in lectures are expected to be applied in tutorials and assessments, and will also support your learning across the Bachelor of Design (Interaction Design) program.

Students should refer to the School of Architecture, Design and Planning resolutions for specific information relating to attendance and participation.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
