DESN3001: Design for Wellbeing

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study focuses on the development of design solutions for the complex needs of a healthy society into the future. Through weekly teaching of design in the health and wellbeing contexts, you will be exposed to various methods, techniques, and approaches to achieve wellbeing-centric solutions. You will apply your skills to address a health or wellbeing challenge by creating a project based on translating a discovery into a device or process in the real world. The project will require you to harness the relevant skill sets that are required to best navigate multifaceted challenges prevalent in health sectors. All solutions designed and developed in this unit of study are expected to take the form of either a product, service, or system. You will learn how to identify problems based on deep explorations and developing context-relevant solutions. Along this journey you will also navigate disciplinary boundaries and communicate with various stakeholders, including experts in the digital health professions. This will allow you to assess and test your solutions on your target audience.

Assessment summary

  • Critique and discussion on assigned reading: Students will read and critique assigned reading through a submission to Canvas plus active discussion and presentation of their critique in class.
  • Probe research report and presentation: Students will design a probe for conducting research and report on the findings through a written report and presentation in class.
  • Collaborative auto-ethnography report and presentation: Students will work in groups and conduct auto-ethnography research on an existing technology, reflect on their findings in relation to previous assignments and propose solutions for product development. Students will share their findings in a written report and in class presentation.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2021 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Fail

0 - 49

Awarded to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, fail to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard established by the faculty.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

If you use AI, you must always acknowledge it. Misusing AI may lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

This unit has an exception to the standard University policy or supplementary information has been provided by the unit coordinator. This information is displayed below:

Late submission is allowed within the 10 days past the due date, with 5% penalty applied per day.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Attendance and class requirements

Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of timetabled classes in accordance with the School Resolutions. Attendance supports engagement with learning, feedback, critique and collaborative activities. Attendance records will be maintained throughout the semester. Where attendance falls below the expected level, the Unit Coordinator may exercise the discretion available under the School Resolution, including determining whether attendance has affected a student’s ability to demonstrate the unit learning outcomes or requiring additional assessment where appropriate.

Students should refer to the School of Architecture, Design and Planning resolutions for specific information relating to attendance and participation.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

In response to student feedback, we have introduced the following changes to DESN3001 to support learning, improve assessment clarity and create a more balanced workload: - More collaborative learning opportunities through group work, enabling students to share the workload, learn from peers, and engage with design challenges that mirror professional practice; - More flexibility within the design brief, giving students more choice to explore issues and opportunities that align with their interests and future aspirations; - Presentation formats that simulate real-world contexts, designed to reflect the ways designers communicate ideas in professional settings and to provide a more engaging assessment experience.
