ECOP2011: Economic Theories of Capitalism

This unit is designed to extend your understanding of the workings of the evolving capitalist economy. You will do this by critically engaging with economic theory which will deepen your knowledge of different schools of economic thought introduced to you in ECOP1001. This critical engagement will enable you to evaluate the fundamental economic features of capitalism such as: the role of markets in social provisioning and capital accumulation; class and inequality; the workings of money and finance; the nexus between unemployment and inflation; the tension between economic growth and the environment; and innovation and technological change.

Early feedback task

This multiple choice test will become available at the end of Week 2, and is due on Friday of Week 3. It does not count toward your final grade, but must be completed to pass the unit. It will check your understanding of material from readings and classes for Weeks 1-3. The intention is to check your engagement with the unit and give you some early feedback before the census date. 

AI and referencing policy for submitted work (tutorial write-up, essay, and final assignment):

Do not use generative AI to create text for your assignments.

Every assignment must include several citations with page numbers for the specific part of the source you are referring to (not the page number range for the whole chapter or article).

We will discuss this policy and the reasons for it in class at the beginning of semester. In summary:

  • I have set all submitted assignments to 'no AI,' because there is no option to set 'restricted AI' for unsecured assessments (i.e. anything outside supervised tests and exams).
  • However, you can use as part of your thinking and development process if you find that useful. (In any case, that is undetectable.) Translation software is absolutely fine.
  • Treat any text generated by AI/large language model applications as you would any source text (papers, books, articles) for academic integrity purposes. That is, copying it verbatim or paraphrasing it without attribution is a form of plagiarism. If you have good reason for including AI-generated text, put quotation marks around it (or block quote) and cite it transparently.
  • Every assignment must include several citations with page numbers for the specific part of the source you are referring to (not the page number range for the whole chapter or article). Most references to sources you cite should include such page numbers, whether you are quoting a text or summarising points from it. This is good scholarly practice - making it easier for readers to trace your sources. It also makes it hard to directly use AI-generated text in your essays, because these tools do not generate reliable references to scholarly literature. Even AI tools that specifically promise to insert reliable references are extremely unreliable at best - don't be scammed. I routinely check citations while marking.
  • The reason for this policy is that essays and similar writing assignments are designed to help you learn to research and make your own arguments. Writing is thinking. Learning to write original research essays is a critically important part of a social science education. Secured assessment like formal exams may test recall, but do not assess research or critical thinking very well, because of the tight time constraint. 
     

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a High distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a Distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Properly documented; writing characterised by style, clarity, and some creativity.

65 - 74

Higher Credit: Evidence of extensive reading and initiative in research, sound grasp of subject matter and appreciation of key issues and context. Engages critically and creatively with the question, and attempts an analytical evaluation of material. Makes a good attempt to critique various interpretations, and offers a pointed and thoughtful contribution to an existing debate. Some evidence of ability to think theoretically as well as empirically, and to conceptualise and problematise issues. Well written and documented.

Lower Credit: Written work contains evidence of comprehensive reading, offers synthesis and critical evaluation of material on its own terms, takes a position in relation to various interpretations. In addition, it shows some extra spark of insight or analysis. Demonstrates understanding of broad historical significance, good selection of evidence, coherent and sustainable argument, some evidence of independent thought.

Pass

50 - 64

Higher Pass: Written work meets basic requirements in terms of reading and research, and demonstrates a reasonable understanding of subject matter. Offers a synthesis of relevant material and shows a genuine effort to avoid paraphrasing, has a logical and comprehensible structure and acceptable documentation, and attempts to mount an argument, though there may be weaknesses in particular areas.

Lower Pass: Written work contains evidence of minimal reading and some understanding of subject matter, offers descriptive summary of material relevant to the question, but may have a tendency to paraphrase; makes a reasonable attempt to organise material logically and comprehensibly and to provide scholarly documentation. There may be gaps in any or all of these areas.

Fail

0 - 49

Work may fail for any or all of the following reasons: unacceptable levels of paraphrasing; irrelevance of content; presentation, grammar or structure so sloppy it cannot be understood; submitted very late without extension.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

Except for supervised exams or in-semester tests, you may use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessments unless expressly prohibited by your unit coordinator. 

For exams and in-semester tests, the use of AI and automated writing tools is not allowed unless expressly permitted in the assessment instructions. 

The icons in the assessment table above indicate whether AI is allowed – whether full AI, or only some AI (the latter is referred to as “AI restricted”). If no icon is shown, AI use is not permitted at all for the task. Refer to Canvas for full instructions on assessment tasks for this unit. 

Your final submission must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of automated writing tools or generative AI, and any material generated that you include in your final submission must be properly referenced. You may be required to submit generative AI inputs and outputs that you used during your assessment process, or drafts of your original work. Inappropriate use of generative AI is considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: According to Faculty Board Resolutions, students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are expected to attend 90% of their classes. If you attend less than 50% of classes, regardless of the reasons, you may be referred to the Examiner’s Board. The Examiner’s Board will decide whether you should pass or fail the unit of study if your attendance falls below this threshold.

  • Lecture recording: Most lectures (in recording-equipped venues) will be recorded and may be made available to students on the LMS. However, you should not rely on lecture recording to substitute your classroom learning experience.

  • Preparation: Students should commit to spend approximately three hours’ preparation time (reading, studying, homework, essays, etc.) for every hour of scheduled instruction.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
