This unit focuses on the economics of environmental problems and the solutions to those problems. We cover economic sources of environmental problems, including market failures due to externalities and public goods. Policies for addressing environmental problems are then analysed. These include Pigouvian taxes and subsidies; regulation with asymmetric information; tradable permits; regulations for public goods and open-access resources; and the allocation of property rights. Applications to climate change, pollution, valuing the environment, and sustainability, among others, are covered.
