Task Overview:

Students will deliver an individual oral presentation analysing an Australian film or play they have seen or encountered during the course. The presentation should provide a critical analysis of the production, focusing on its artistic, cultural, and historical significance. Students are expected to draw upon live or recorded performances and theoretical perspectives to support their discussion.

This task encourages students to develop their oral communication skills, demonstrate critical engagement with Australian theatre and film, and articulate key concepts through an interactive presentation.

Assessment Task 2: Film/Play Essay

Word Count: 2500 words

Task Overview:

Students will write an essay critically analysing an Australian film or play they have seen or encountered during the course. The essay should focus on both production elements and cultural relevance, exploring how the work contributes to the broader landscape of Australian theatre and film.

Students must engage with relevant scholarship, demonstrate a sophisticated critical analysis of the production, and discuss its educational and societal implications.

Essays must address:

How does the chosen film/play reflect or challenge dominant narratives of Australian identity, culture, and history?
How do production elements (e.g., acting, direction, staging, cinematography) contribute to the meaning of the chosen film/play, and what impact do they have on audience reception?
In what ways does the chosen film/play function as a medium for learning, particularly for young audiences or within educational contexts?
How does the chosen film/play engage with First Nations perspectives, and what is its role in shaping contemporary Australian theatre/film discourse?

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
