FMBA5010: Leading Business Innovation

Intensive July - August, 2026 [Block mode] - Castlereagh St, Sydney

This unit aims to provide the skills by which students analyse business innovation in different companies and provide recommended strategies for improvement. Topics covered include types of innovation, the S-Curve, idea generation, recognising opportunities, moving innovation to market, enhancing creativity, and the role of the leader in innovation. This unit provides students with an opportunity to learn and apply a variety of innovation tools and apply them directly to contemporary organisational contexts.

Assessment summary

The Innovation Audit & Blueprint: 

Teams of 4–5 students select an established, complex organization (e.g., an incumbent facing significant technological or sustainability transitions, avoiding early-stage startups). They act as external strategic advisors tasked with auditing the firm’s current innovation architecture and designing a holistic "Innovation Blueprint."

  • Part A (Audit): Analyze how the firm currently organizes for innovation, maps its ecosystem, and measures outcomes. Identify the core friction points between their stated strategy and execution.
  • Part B (Blueprint): Develop an integrated, actionable proposal. Students must explicitly define the executive stewardship required, the recommended innovation process, how teams shoudl be formed, and how the organization must structure its internal units to deliver on the strategy.
  • Deliverables: A 2,500-word executive report

The Experimentation Log: In this individual portfolio, students must design and track a real or simulated "business experiment" addressing a specific friction point within a complex business problem.

  • The Task: Students select a concrete business problem (either from a provided list of complex corporate case studies or a pre-approved live organization). They must document their journey of applying the course's tactical tools:

    • Log 1 (Strategy  ;Process Selection): Formulate Target, Scope and Advantage and justify the selection of a specific innovation process (e.g., stage-gate vs. agile vs. open innovation) to tackle it.

    • Log 2 (Experimentation & Measurement Design): Design a rigorous business experiment. They must outline the metrics—clearly distinguishing between input, throughput, and output metrics—used to evaluate success.

    • Log 3 (The Pivot/Persevere Framework): Based on simulated or real data/feedback, write a strategic justification for whether the organization should pivot, persevere, or kill the initiative, utilizing the language of risk mitigation.

  • Deliverables: A three-part structured portfolio (approx. 500 words per log).

Innovation Director Hot Seat: The student is the newly appointed Director of Innovation at an established, complex organization (e.g., an incumbent airline struggling to implement a radical new sustainable catering and waste-reduction process, or a manufacturing giant trying to integrate AI into its production line). They have been in the role for six months and have designed a pilot project. Now, they must defend their progress and structural choices.

  • Minutes 0–5: The Progress & Architecture Briefing The student delivers a crisp, 5-minute briefing to their superiors. Using a single slide or visual framework, they present their pilot's architecture, explicitly justifying: The specific innovation processes selected for the pilot (and why traditional business-unit processes were bypassed). How they have organized the team (the mix of internal corporate insiders and external ecosystem partners). The metrics they are using to track early stage throughput, rather than standard ROI.

  • Minutes 5–15: The Cross-Examination (The Friction Points) This is where the interactivity oral exam happens. The educator plays the role of a skeptical superior during this phase to test the student’s ability to navigate organizational complexities.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

When you don’t meet the learning outcomes of the unit to a satisfactory standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Lecture recordings: All lectures and seminars are recorded and will be available on Canvas for student use. Please note the Business School does not own the system and cannot guarantee that the system will operate or that every class will be recorded. Students should ensure they attend and participate in all classes.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
