HSBH3025: Bodily Senses in Health and Disease

Semester 2a, 2026 [Block mode] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Sensory input allows us to connect to the world and experience varied states of our own body. Understanding how senses work is important for basic science, esp. neuroscience and psychology, and applied areas such as health and engineering. This unit focuses on the sensory processes that underlie perception of one's own body and its actions. Sensory functioning in both healthy and disease states are considered, including the following topics: proprioception or sense of position and movement of body parts, vestibular system, touch, role of vision, brain plasticity, disorders of sensory processing (agnosias, neglect , phantom limbs, vertigo) and most recent experimental developments in rehabilitation and brain-computer interface. Tutorial assessment includes in-depth analysis of a topic of your choice and running your own experiments. NB: This unit does not teach about treatments taught in the core units of professional health science degrees.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Monday lectures require preparation. Please watch the online lecture segment before the live class. Participation points apply to selected lectures, as indicated on Canvas. Please attend live lectures (one hour only) for a richer, more engaging learning experience. 

Tutorials are compulsory. Please be attentive and engage actively in your own way. Work with your group between classes to prepare for the tutorials dedicated to your group project.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Students have always been highly engaged in this unit's tutorials, where I demonstrate phenomena discussed in lectures and help them develop their group projects. Several reported that tutorials were where they learned the most, and suggested extending their duration. This resonated with me, so this year I increased tutorial time by 50%, while restructuring lectures into an online content-delivery component and a face-to-face interactive component.
