INFO4914: Major Industrial Research Project

Overview

In this unit of study, a student is partnered with an external non-academic organisation where they will complete six months of full-time work at the organisation's site, during which they carry out a research project and other related work assigned by the organisation that is relevant to their stream of Honours project studies. Enrolment in this unit is through a competitive application process. This unit of study gives students experience in carrying out a major applied research project within an industrial environment, and in preparing and presenting detailed reports (both oral and written) on their work. It is expected that the student will be engaged full-time on the project at the organization’s normal work site.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Students will be required to commit 37.5 hours per week for 26 weeks to project work at an industrial worksite.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 24 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 480-600 hours of student effort in total.

LO2. Undertake a literature survey for a field of CS with critical thinking and produce and present a research proposal in a clear and effective way in oral and written forms
LO3. Demonstrate knowledge of major approaches used in CS research and ability to apply one or more to own project with original contribution to the field
LO4. Write a thesis presenting and evaluating one's original contribution, in a style suitable for the academic literature
LO5. Understand ethical practices and copyrights in research
