Overview

The Basic Gastroenterology syllabus covers the requirements of trainee physician practice. The content is focussed on diagnosis and investigation of common gastroenterological conditions and the essentials of management of these conditions. The module learning materials are linked to a library of clinical cases representing common and important gastroenterological conditions.

Assessment summary

Quizzes: The quizzes are designed to help student gauge their progress in meeting the learning outcomes. Students may refer to learning materials when answering. There will be 3 quizzes, each with 10 multiple choice questions. There is one attempt only. The quizzes are open for a set period.
Case report: In general, about a third of the report should be allocated to the case history and two thirds to discussion of the case. The report should be based on a patient the student has cared for, or seen, in the course of their clinical work. The format of the case report can be as a narrative or arranged as medical record documentation, including history of the presenting illness, previous medical history, social history, examination, investigations, and diagnosis.
Case Presentation: Students will choose one of 3 cases provided. They will prepare a clear 5–7 minute narrated PowerPoint presentation (saved as MP4) covering Clinical presentation, Diagnostic approach and/or management plan as relevant. Students will be able to utilise generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist in analysing or summarising one aspect of the chosen case and will reflect on how AI contributed to or augmented their clinical reasoning.
Case presentation AI interaction report: : Students will download and submit a copy of their Case Presentation AI prompts and AI interaction showing reflection and critical engagement with AI.
Final exam: The final exam is a graded, fully invigilated exam conducted via Canvas with the help of an online proctor. This is known as "Live+ (Type A)" exam. You will be required to schedule your exam later in the semester. The exam will contain 30 multiple-choice questions (single best answer). The exam is "closed book", you are not permitted any materials with you for this exam.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

If you use AI, you must always acknowledge it. Misusing AI may lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Attendance and class requirements

Required materials: The following equipment is required in order to take the final exam: a desktop computer or laptop (not tablet), a webcam and microphone, an internet connection speed of at least 2 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload speed and a browser with pop-up blocker disabled (Chrome is recommended).

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 3 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 60-75 hours of student effort in total.
