This unit extends students' language skills to an advanced level in order to achieve confidence and proficiency in written and spoken Japanese. Students undertake activities built around topics relating to a variety of language styles – including, but not limited to, gender, dialect, youth speech, class, and loan-words – and examine their usage in Japanese culture and society. Students will further develop analytical skills drawing on a variety of contemporary texts from different genres, to evaluate information critically and to express opinions through discussions on a wide range of topics and research projects using colloquial, formal and academic Japanese both in written and oral forms.
