MARC5000: Induction Studio

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

The Induction Studio sets the foundation for an understanding of the various dimensions of architectural design. In response to a studio brief, students apply and develop skills in architectural processes: from research, brief, site and precedent analysis to conceptual and schematic design, from technical resolution through to the documentation related to planning applications and construction. The studio thus provides a basis for the development of design, communication, and technical skills across the key phases of architectural design, whilst remaining attentive to the regulatory frameworks, and deeper cultural and historical contexts in which architectural practice is situated. Students engage in lectures, tutorials and exercises and apply skills and extend competencies developed in undergraduate contexts. The Induction Studio also introduces students to the Master of Architecture degree and its structure, processes and protocols.

Assessment summary

Precedent Studies, Analysis, and Early Design Proposition (20%) - groupwork
Students will present their design research and early design exercises that respond to the issues, requirements, opportunities, and expectations outlined in a project brief and planning requirement, driven by critical thinking and findings from context analysis, precedent studies, architectural exercises, and functional evaluation, with coherent communication.

Interim Design Presentation (30%) - individual
Students will present a coherent interim design scheme composed of well-integrated components and initial details with a clear resolution. The interim design should demonstrate an initial understanding of architectural functionality, spatiality, and technicality that intelligently responds to its context and the project brief.

Final Design Presentation (50%) - individual
Students will present a coherent final design scheme composed of well-integrated components and elaborated details with a proper resolution. The final design should demonstrate an in-depth understanding of architectural functionality, spatiality, and technicality that intelligently responds to its context and the project brief.

Attendance: Students should be present and engaged in their learning during classes. Late arrival/early departure will be deemed as an absence. Students are required to meet a minimum 90% tutorial attendance to pass this unit. Students with lower tutorial attendance but who have been granted special consideration may be offered the opportunity to do an alternative assessment to pass the attendance threshold.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Please note, as per the University of Sydney School of Architecture Design and Planning Faculty Resolutions 2022; For non-public assessments, work submitted after the deadline will incur a penalty of 5% of the total marks earned for the assessment per calendar day. Work submitted 20 calendar days or more after the deadline will not be assessed and will receive a mark of zero. For assessment involving public, oral, and/or visual presentations completed after the deadline, a penalty of 10% of the total marks earned for the assessment will be imposed per calendar day. Work completed 10 calendar days or more after the deadline will not be assessed and will receive a mark of zero.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Clause 8 (3) (a). Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of timetabled activities for each unit of study, unless granted exemption.

 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 12 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 240-300 hours of student effort in total.
