This advanced unit of study will enhance students' understanding of cardiovascular complications of metabolic disease, and increase confidence in the assessment and management of various cardiovascular conditions. The focus is on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease, patient-centred screening and management of standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (including hypertension, lipid and lipoprotein disorders, diabetes, and lifestyle factors pertinent to cardiovascular health), assessment and management of patients with ischaemic heart disease, heart failure (with a focus on ischaemic cardiomyopathy, diabetic cardiomyopathy and hypertensive cardiomyopathy), peripheral arterial disease, cerebrovascular disease, arrhythmogenic disturbances (including atrial fibrillation), sleep disorders and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The assessments are designed to apply your learning to clinically-based cases, which will strengthen your ability to manage cardiometabolic disease and cardiac complications in clinical practice. Upon completion of this unit of study, students will possess the knowledge and skills to assess and manage various aspects of cardiovascular disease and apply evidence-based strategies to improve clinical outcomes.
