This unit of study introduces students to the ethical, legal and psycho-social issues surrounding the safe delivery of medical radiation sciences in the Australian healthcare system. Modules within the unit are applied to medical radiation sciences and will cover the following: healthcare ethics, legal aspects of practice, risk management and quality assurance, radiation considerations, the Australian healthcare system, social factors and models of health, as well as specific health psychology topics.

Late submission

Simple extensions

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Define the requirements of a profession, being professional and working in an interprofessional context
  • LO2. Examine the Australian healthcare system, including provisions for MIS practice, patient advocacy, safety framework, and the roles and scopes of the professional and regulatory bodies associated with MIS, in order to construct arguments and present information in both written and oral form.
  • LO3. Describe radiation procedures necessary for a high quality procedure ensuring awareness of radiation burden.
  • LO4. Demonstrate an understanding of quality assurance processes in the MIS disciplines and how these processes raise the standard of practice and minimise risk of error, especially in regards to radiation.
  • LO5. Explain trends in the delivery of MIS services to the Australian population (including Medicare and private practice).
  • LO6. Collaborate in a small group to identify cultural issues/ sensitivities that could be encountered in a variety of cultural/special needs groups when attending a MIS procedure, and collect and assess evidence from credible sources in order to inform an educational resource for health science students.
  • LO7. Examine leadership and professional/personal reflective practice within the MIS context, and identify ongoing professional learning needs including knowledge of CPD requirements, in order to develop a personal pathway of life-long learning
  • LO8. Describe the perspectives and methods of “health psychology” and “health sociology”, and their relevance to the health of populations.
  • LO9. Demonstrate an awareness of issues for the patient and healthcare professional surrounding terminal and chronic illness
  • LO10. Apply knowledge of Australian health care law to MIS case studies that integrate common issues relating to criminal and civil law, negligence, consent, confidentiality, error and apologies, in order to develop a written discussion of significant issues.
