This unit of study introduces students to the ethical, legal and psycho-social issues surrounding the safe delivery of medical radiation sciences in the Australian healthcare system. Modules within the unit are applied to medical radiation sciences and will cover the following: healthcare ethics, legal aspects of practice, risk management and quality assurance, radiation considerations, the Australian healthcare system, social factors and models of health, as well as specific health psychology topics.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Apply knowledge relating to the legal, ethical, professional and quality assurance requirements for the medical imaging sciences profession, including the use of radiation.
  • LO2. Critically review the Australian healthcare system, including provisions for MIS practice, delivery of MIS services to the Australian population (including Medicare and private practice), patient advocacy, safety framework, and the roles and scopes of the professional and regulatory bodies associated with MIS.
  • LO3. Critically review cultural awareness, leadership and professional/personal reflective practice within the MIS context, and identify ongoing professional learning needs including knowledge of CPD requirements and life-long learning.
  • LO4. Critically review the perspectives and methods of health psychology and health sociology for the patient and healthcare professionals.
