This unit of study introduces students to the ethical, legal and psycho-social issues surrounding the safe delivery of medical radiation sciences in the Australian healthcare system. Modules within the unit are applied to medical radiation sciences and will cover the following: healthcare ethics, legal aspects of practice, risk management and quality assurance, radiation considerations, the Australian healthcare system, social factors and models of health, as well as specific health psychology topics.

Late submission

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Apply knowledge relating to the requirements of a profession, being professional and working in an interprofessional context, in order to exemplify successful collaboration with health science students, evaluate the different roles of members of the healthcare team, and critically reflect on the impact of patient-centred care.
  • LO2. Critically review the Australian healthcare system, including provisions for MIS practice, patient advocacy, safety framework, and the roles and scopes of the professional and regulatory bodies associated with MIS.
  • LO3. Critically review radiation procedures necessary for a high quality practice, ensuring awareness of radiation burden, and quality assurance processes in the MIS disciplines and how these processes raise the standard of practice and minimise risk of error, especially in regards to radiation.
  • LO4. Investigate resources that document trends in the Australian health care system, delivery of MIS services to the Australian population (including Medicare and private practice), in order to analyse changes to the MIS profession and health care system over time.
  • LO5. Collaborate in a small group to identify cultural issues/sensitivities that could be encountered in a variety of cultural/special needs groups when attending a MIS procedure, and collect and assess evidence from credible sources in order to innovate an educational resource for health science students.
  • LO6. Critically review leadership and professional/personal reflective practice within the MIS context, and identify ongoing professional learning needs including knowledge of CPD requirements, in order to compose a personal pathway of life-long learning
  • LO7. Critically review the perspectives and methods of health psychology and health sociology for the patient and healthcare professionals.
  • LO8. Apply knowledge of Australian health care law to MIS case studies that integrate common issues relating to criminal and civil law, negligence, consent, confidentiality, error and apologies, in order to compose a written discussion of significant issues.
  • LO9. Apply knowledge of ethical codes, principles and rights of patients to MIS case studies, in order to formulate decisions that show responsibility and accountability, and an in-depth understanding of the bioethical principles underpinning MIS practice.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Dear students, feedback from the 2021 cohort of students has provided us with a good understanding of activities in MRSC5003 that facilitated learning, and other areas for improvement.
