Overview

This unit of study extends students' knowledge of direct and computed digital radiography systems. Imaging principles of fluoroscopy, computed tomography, mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging will be investigated with particular reference to equipment, safety, dosimetry and artefacts. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of image processing techniques commonly applied in sectional imaging modalities.

Early feedback task

This unit includes an early feedback task, designed to give you feedback prior to the census date for this unit. Details are provided in the Canvas site and your result will be recorded in your Marks page. It is important that you actively engage with this task so that the University can support you to be successful in this unit.

Assessment summary

The in-semester assessment comprises two secure written MCQ tests worth 90% overall: a 45% Computed Tomography test in Week 7 (covering learning outcomes 1 and 2) and a 45% Breast imaging and MRI test in Week 12 (covering learning outcomes 5–9). Both are individual, one-hour, invigilated exams with no AI permitted. An additional 10% open out-of-class early feedback task on Digital Fluoroscopy is scheduled in Week 3 (covering learning outcomes 3 and 4). This is an individual hurdle task that provides early feedback.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance:

Attendance at lectures and the practical session is expected. Discussions in and during class are often useful and are not well recorded by the automated recording systems online.

The unit takes an active learning approach; there will be activities in class, pre-reading before class and discussion during it. The practical session is designed to integrate with and complement lectures, so the learning experience comes from the combination of these activities. As this is a 6 Credit Point course it is generally assumed to require about 6 hours of work on the unit per week.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

LO2. Explain CT applications and image reconstruction methods together with key technique factors and their effects on image quality and radiation dose.
LO3. Explain fluoroscopy techniques, and describe the physical principles and main components of digital fluoroscopic imaging systems, relating each component to its function and discuss their properties and advantages.
LO4. Describe the clinical applications and utility of digital fluoroscopy.
LO5. Describe the applications, components, design and function of mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis equipment.
LO6. Discuss radiation dose considerations and the requirements for quality assurance in mammography and tomosynthesis.
LO7. Describe the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance and the manipulation of signal intensity based on T1 and T2 relaxation.
LO8. Explain the spatial localisation of the MR signal, the formation of images, and the adjustment of imaging parameters to create T1- and T2-weighted contrast.
LO9. Explain the essential safety principles of magnetic resonance imaging, and describe the different clinical applications of MRI.

Site visit guidelines

Groups of maximum 20 students will attend the CT and advanced visualisation software tutorials in Susan Wakil Health Building. Please do not attend if you are not scheduled to be present as the space is limited. Direct swaps must be requested and approved by teaching staff.
