MRTY5041: Computed Tomography B

Semester 1, 2026 [Online] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study looks at advanced CT concepts and imaging procedures. This includes applications that provide functional information or require more complex post processing. Cardiac angiography, virtual endoscopy, brain perfusion, portable, and interventional CT will be explored. The unit also examines the latest CT methodologies including volume imaging, dual source and muliti-energy CT, and the use of CT in other modalities such as molecular imaging and therapy planning. The physical principles, clinical application, and appropriate utilisation of these CT procedures will be explored.

This is an advanced practice unit that includes considerations relating to students' clinical experience and current practice. Students enrolling in this unit are expected to be working in CT at least two days per week. Students will need to apply for Department Permission and provide CV detailing their modality experience, and supporting letter from their employer indicating their experience.

Assessment summary

WEEKLY ASSESSMENTS

There are 12 weekly assessments, each worth 5 marks that will total 60% of the subject mark.

There is no weekly assignment due in week 13 as that gives you time to complete your major assignment that must be handed in by Sunday 31st May

Six of the assignments are Discussion board type questions requiring approximately 250 word responses to a question posed relating to the information found in the weekly lecture. Another 150 word response is required of another student's initial response. In all ~400 word response in total is required.

There are also 6 MCQ tests that relate to the lecture of that week - 10 multiple choice style questions worth 0.5 mark each totalling 5 marks. You will be given 15 minutes in total to complete each weekly MCQ. Back tracking will be allowed.

All 12 assessments will be due on the Sunday of each week up until 23:59 hours.

Please note that week 6 is the beginning of Easter. The assignment for that week will still be required to submit by Easter Sunday at 23:59.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENT

The link on the front canvas page will detail the major assignment that will be worth 40% of subject total marks. This assignment will be open on week 1 so students have ample time to consider the theme of the assignment and prepare it over the course of the semester.

Please note that ALL requests for any addditional time will have to go through Special Cons with documents to substantiate the request. You have all semester  to prepare and complete this assignment so please organise your time around work and private activities so you will submit the assignment on time. 

 

Assessment criteria

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: The mode of delivery for this unit of study is distance education. On campus attendance is not required.

 

  • Required materials: This subject has the following computer requirements: desktop computer or laptop (not tablet), webcam and microphone (built-in or external), connection to network with sufficient internet speed (at least 3 Mbps download speed and 3 Mbps upload), Microsoft PowerPoint or similar.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

There is no prescibed textbook for this subject
