PHAR4812: Integrated Dispensing Practice

Semester 1, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Integrated Dispensing Practice links together the skills and knowledge that students have developed throughout their degree to perform the fundamental skills required of pharmacists in practice. In a simulated-practice environment, students interact with patients and health providers to optimise health outcomes. In order to assist students to see the patient as a whole person within a personal and social, as well as medical context, specific patients are followed over an extended period of time. Interactions include responding to requests for prescription and non-prescription medicines. Learning is centred on developing the skills required to effectively manage medication-information and to record the outcomes of patient interactions. Verbal communication skills are developed in order to interact effectively with patients and health providers to elicit medication- related information and to provide advice, recommendations and support. Students integrate and reconcile various pieces of information to make an assessment of the appropriateness of medicine for a patient are also developed. Written communication skills are developed in order to: systematically document patient interactions; devise a current medication list; report incidents, write letters to prescribers; and issue certificates for absence from work.

Assessment summary

  • Workshop and practical participation: The majority of the learning in this unit will occur in tutorials and practical workshops, with some guided self-paced study. In tutorials, students will engage in role-play interviews with other students and tutors. Students will also participate in online quizzes during and between workshops, and will additionally upload records of work from each tutorial, as instructed, to satisfy the week's participation mark. 
  • Assignments: Students will receive a case prompt and will be assessed on the accuracy and best-practise appropriateness of a submitted SOAP note clinical record documenting their analysis and response to the issues in the case. Students will also be required to undertake elements of formal processes, reviews, or certifications commonly utilised in community pharmacy practise.
  • Interactive Oral Examinations: Students will engage in simulated counselling session in relation to a pre-prepared medication-related issue, acting as a community pharmacist. The cases utilised will be linked to the cases submitted as written Assignments. Assessment will include overall counselling performance, including verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as clinical content and appropriateness of recomendations and responses.
  • Students who do not achieve a pass on the first attempt at a hurdle oral examination will have one automatic opportunity to re-attempt that examination after Week 13. Marks for re-attempts will be capped at 50%."
  • All hurdle tasks must have achieved a minimum of 50% each to pass this unit overall. 

No use of AI tools (Interactive Oral assessments)

The use of automated writing tools and generative artificial intelligence is prohibited in this assessment. You are not allowed to use AI or any other software to create information or answers, to alter your own original writing, or to generate or modify text from other sources. This includes translation software, editing/paraphrasing software and other generative artificial intelligence tools.

Unapproved use is considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and may result in penalties, which can include a fail for the assessment.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: In accordance with the Bachelor of Pharmacy Course resolutions on Attendance Requirements, students must attend a minimum of 85% tutorials/workshops to satisfy attendance requirements for this unit of study. For more information see Canvas site. 

If a tutorial/ lab/workshop is missed due to illness or misadventure, students are to submit a special consideration application along with supporting documentation.

Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the commencement of the workshop (that is, 15 minutes past the hour) will be marked as unprofessional, which is a component of the class participation and professionalism assessment. Students swapping a class without prior approval from the UoS co-ordinator will be marked as unprofessional.

 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

The AMH and eTG are freely accessible electronically from the University Library, and will be extensively utilised throughout PHAR4812.

The APF may be purchased privately, though students are not required to have a copy of the APF to pass PHAR4812.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Changes have been made in response to student feedback to minimise workload burden and better develop clinical skills over the semester. Weekly SOAP notes will no longer need to be finalised at home and submitted weekly. Instead, these will be worked on and finalised in class with no weekly submissions necessary. An early feedback task has been added as an opportunity to practice skills and understand expectations from assignments early in the semester. Smaller class sizes will remain to maximise tutor interaction, class discussions, and feedback. Classwork will continue to be detailed, diverse, and realistic problem-solving activities with meaningful exploration of each patient and their management.
