PHAR4823: Pharmacy Services and Public Health

This unit of study will focus on the role of pharmacy in public health and health promotion, and on developing students' understanding of the Australian Health Care System, health policy and regulation affecting health in Australia and internationally. We will develop students' skills in identifying, accessing and interpreting relevant policy, regulation and research literature. Topics which underpin understanding of public health including epidemiology/pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics will also be addressed. Through workshops and assignments, students will be given the opportunity to integrate their learning and apply this knowledge to address population health care problems with a special emphasis on achieving the quality, safety and judicious use of medicines in health care

Assessment summary

  • Workshop participation and pre-work: Students are expected to actively participate in workshop activities, to complete and submit pre-work before each workshop, and to have done the relevant readings and either attended or listened to linked lectures.
  • Tutorial quizzes: There are three in-class quizzes during week 6, 10 and 12 tutorials. The first two quizzes include 10 multiple-choice questions; the third includes 5 multiple-choice questions. These quizzes cover content in lectures and workshops during weeks 3 to 5 (tutorial quiz 1); weeks 6-9 (tutorial quiz 2) and weeks 10-11 (tutorial quiz 3). The quizzes provides examples of the types of questions to be expected on the final exam and allow students to assess their progress throughout the semester. 
  • Reflective research skills assignment: In this individual assignment, which is submitted on-line, each student is asked to find and select three references each that will be useful for their team projects and to explain their literature search, why they selected these references, and why they judge the evidence to be trustworthy.
  • Team project A: 'pitch presentation': The aim of this first presentation is for teams to “pitch” their project and convince the audience of the need for an intervention. This 'pitch' can be to a community group, funder, or government body. The main focus is on the health risk, why an intervention is needed, and why a specific region or community was selected. 
  • Team project B: final presentation: This presentation describes the team’s planned intervention, including background information on the health risk, why an intervention is needed, previous experience, details of intervention activities, and how success will be evaluated.
  • Team project C: final report: The final report on the team’s public health intervention should include the public health issue, region and at-risk population addressed, and the planned intervention. It includes background research on epidemiology and on the effectiveness of previous interventions to address the issue.
  • Final examination: The final examination is framed around the course learning objectives and focuses on the main content in the lectures and workshops. There will be approximately 1-2 exam questions per lecture and 2 exam questions per workshop. The exam will be a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions.
  • The Final Exam requires a minimum of 50% pass to pass this unit overall.
  • Reflective peer review of groupwork: Students are asked to reflect on their own and their fellow team members' contributions to the team project. This assignment is submitted on-line.

  • Do not rely on the accuracy of outputs. You remain responsible for your work. This means you must independently verify and edit AI-generated content to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and suitability of the output.
  • If you use these tools, you must be aware of their limitations, biases, and propensity for fabrication.

 Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission, must be appropriately referenced.  The use of automated writing tools and generative artificial intelligence is prohibited in this assessment. You are not allowed to use AI or any other software to create information or answers, to alter your own original writing, or to generate or modify text from other sources. This includes translation software, editing/paraphrasing software and other generative artificial intelligence tools.

 Unapproved use is considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and may result in penalties, which can include a fail for the assessment.

PLEASE NOTE: Supplementary Yr assessments: Students may be offered a re-assessment of one compulsory-to-pass assessment, in the RE1 and RE2 Exam periods at the end of the year, as described in the Final Year Rule. For more information see the announcement on the Canvas Year site.

Repeating students: Exemption from components (tutorials, workshops) for students repeating PHAR4823 will not be granted, except in exceptional circumstances by the Year co-ordinator/ BPharm Program Director.

Except for supervised exams or in-semester tests, you may use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessments unless expressly prohibited by your unit coordinator. 

For exams and in-semester tests, the use of AI and automated writing tools is not allowed unless expressly permitted in the assessment instructions. 

The icons in the assessment table above indicate whether AI is allowed – whether full AI, or only some AI (the latter is referred to as “AI restricted”). If no icon is shown, AI use is not permitted at all for the task. Refer to Canvas for full instructions on assessment tasks for this unit. 

Your final submission must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of automated writing tools or generative AI, and any material generated that you include in your final submission must be properly referenced. You may be required to submit generative AI inputs and outputs that you used during your assessment process, or drafts of your original work. Inappropriate use of generative AI is considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: In accordance with the Course resolutions on Attendance Requirements, students must attend a minimum of 85% tutorials/ workshops (8 of 9 workshops) to satisfy attendance requirements for this unit of study. For more information see Canvas site. 

If a tutorial/ workshop is missed due to illness or misadventure, students are to submit a special consideration application along with supporting documentation. Students with approved special consideration must attend an alternative class or complete an additional task.

Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the commencement of the tutorial/workshop will be marked as unprofessional, which is a component of the class participation and professionalism assessment. Students swapping a class without prior approval from the UoS co-ordinator will be marked as unprofessional.

 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Changes have been incorporated into the lecture content and team assignments in response to student feedback: - a stronger emphasis on the role of the pharmacist in public health; - team project topics more closely aligned to pharmacy practice; - interactive lecture sessions with breakout discussions; Two additional shifts in assessments were introduced this year: - a shift from 1 to 3 tutorial quizzes, as students found the tutorial quiz helpful last year for studying and to gauge their own progress throughout the semester. The quizzes are worth 3% each of students' grades (9% in total). The quizzes allow students to familiarise themselves with expectations for the final exam, enable tutors to intervene in a timely manner if a student has fallen behind, and allow for targeted review of content. A co-design workshop was introduced (workshop 2) to provide an introduction to co-design skills. A co-design component has also been included in the team project. The aim is to introduce students to skills needed to work towards shared goals in a participatory manner with patients and community members.
