REHB2026: Fundamentals of Disability

This unit introduces students to broad definitions pertinent to both disability/disadvantage and rehabilitation. This unit provides unique opportunities to learn about disability and both the individual and systemic factors that explain disability and disadvantage. The unit surveys international perspectives on the disability process with a disability-human rights perspective. Students will learn about disability as it is seen through the lens of society. The various models of disability, language related to disability, and power, oppression, privilege, and intersectionality as they relate to disability will be discussed. Students will also learn about other holistic aspects of disability including accessibility, sexuality, and disability culture.

Assessment summary

  • Weekly quizzes and activities: Weekly quizzes and activities (alternating weeks) are designed to allow deeper engagement with the material.
  • Week 3 disability language task: Apply concepts on disability language to create a short (1-2 minute or 1-page) object.
  • Assignment 2, Interview plan: This assignment involves applying concepts learned in class to plan an interview with an expert in the field
  • Assignment 3, Understanding Multiple Perspectives: This three-part assignment involves submitting a written or recorded original work, engaging with peer work and providing feedback, and writing a reflection.

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

This unit has an exception to the standard University policy or supplementary information has been provided by the unit coordinator. This information is displayed below:

As listed in the Assessment Procedures Policy, late penalties apply for any work submitted late Written work submitted electronically after 11.59 pm on the due date will be considered to have been submitted late. For every calendar day up to and including ten calendar days after the due date, a penalty of 5% of the maximum awardable marks will be applied to late work. The penalty will be calculated by first marking the work, and then subtracting 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date. For work submitted more than ten calendar days after the due date a mark of zero will be awarded. The marker may elect to, but is not required to, provide feedback on such work.

Academic integrity

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: This unit is completed completely online and can be completed asynchronously.  Each week there will be a lecture on Zoom which students are encouraged to attend but students can opt to listen to recordings and complete the online material in their own time.  All students are expected to contribute to discussions and meet with other students to complete groupwork.  Marks are based on active participation in activities and students will benefit from engaging in discussion with peers to achieve the learning objectives

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

  • LO2. describe psychological, social, and cultural aspects of disability and identify how these impact the lives of those with a disability
  • LO3. Compare perspectives on intersectionality, ableism, and external perceptions of disability, and how they impact the lives of people with disabilities
  • LO4. Evaluate disability culture, the importance of physical accessibility, the influence of the media on disability, and how all of these intertwine with power, privilege, and oppression
  • LO5. Evaluate the importance of advocacy, and advocate within your own community.
  • LO6. Compare the social model of disability with other models and consider the influence on employment, relationships, independence and living valued lives
  • LO7. Analyse your own values about disability and consider the source of your personal views and the extent to which your life experiences have impacted your values
  • LO8. Consider how terminology and stereotypes impact societal acceptance of disability including inspiration porn and disability binarism
